- Abstract: The phenology of tree species in tropical dry forests is related to a well‐characterized interaction between functional traits (e.g., wood density) and climatic seasonality (e.g., drought stress), but the existence of these relationships in tropical wet forests is largely unknown. For 12 months, we monitored the vegetative and reproductive phases of 281 individuals of 46 tree species in a coastal rain forest in Northeastern Brazil. We hypothesized that wood density and related tissue water storage would reliably distinguish phenological groups of trees, and that leaf shedding, flushing, and flowering in high wood density species would be closely related to rainfall, due to low tissue water storage capacity in these species. By contrast, we predicted leaf unfolding and flowering of low wood density species would depend exclusively on photoperiod. As predicted, wood density and saturated water content were inversely correlated, and species with either high or low wood density had distinct phenological patterns and levels of synchrony within species. Abiotic variables were not strongly associated with phenological events. Phenophases of leaf unfolding, flowering, and fruiting occurred earlier in low wood density species than in high wood density species, possibly indicating an adaptive strategy for preemptive resource capture. RESUMO: A fenologia de espécies arbóreas em florestas tropicais secas está relacionada a uma interação entre características funcionais (por exemplo, densidade da madeira) e sazonalidade climática (por exemplo, estresse hídrico), mas a existência dessas relações em florestas tropicais úmidas é amplamente desconhecida. Durante 12 meses, monitoramos as fases vegetativa e reprodutiva de 281 indivíduos de 46 espécies de árvores em uma floresta tropical costeira no Nordeste do Brasil. Nossa hipótese é que a densidade da madeira e o armazenamento de água nos tecidos separariam de forma confiável grupos fenológicos de árvores, e que a queda de folhas, brotamento e a floração em espécies de alta densidade de madeira estariam intimamente relacionados à chuva, devido à baixa capacidade de armazenamento de água nos tecidos nessas espécies. Em contraste, previmos que o brotamento e a floração de espécies de baixa densidade de madeira dependeriam exclusivamente do fotoperíodo. Conforme previsto, a densidade da madeira e o conteúdo de água saturada foram inversamente correlacionados, e as espécies com alta ou baixa densidade da madeira tinham padrões fenológicos distintos e níveis de sincronia dentro das espécies. Variáveis abióticas não foram fortemente associadas a eventos fenológicos. Fenofases de brotamento, floração e frutificação ocorreram mais cedo em espécies de baixa densidade de madeira do que em espécies de alta densidade de madeira, possivelmente indicando uma estratégia adaptativa para captura de recursos. … (more)
