- Abstract : Chlorophyll a and b are the light‐harvesting pigments in photosynthetic proteins in plants. Their photophysics relies on the microenvironment with regard to transition energies as well as quenching of triplet states. Gruber et al. studied the intrinsic photophysics of charge‐tagged chlorophyll a and b using gas‐phase action spectroscopy. They show broad absorption in the visible regime with multiple bands due to the asymmetry of the chlorophyll ring structure and strong vibronic coupling. Photoinduced dissociation over several milliseconds is explained by the population of triplet states. For more information, see the Communication by E. Gruber, et al. on page 9153 ff.
