Abstract

ABSTRACT: The United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union on 23 June 2016 by a margin of 52% to 48%. Gibraltar, at the same time, voted overwhelmingly to remain and with 96% backing gave the highest support to the European project anywhere in the voting electorate. In this article, Gibraltarian historian and Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia charts Gibraltar's time in the European Union, from accession on 1 January 1973 to departure on 31 January 2020. He analyses the past, ponders on the present and discusses possibilities for the future.
