- Abstract: Herein, we report a room-temperature preparation of alkaline earth molybdates AMoO4 (A = Ca, Sr, and Ba) using formamide (CH3 NO) solvent assisted precipitation method. The as-synthesized molybdates were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) to study the phase, morphology, and optical properties respectively. PXRD analysis reveals scheelite-type tetragonal structured BaMoO4, CaMoO4, and SrMoO4 with no other impurity. SEM studies confirm the polygonal shape morphology of agglomerate particles in the 30–50 nm size range. The optical band gap calculated using the Kubelka-Munk function is 3.95 eV, 4.34 eV, and 4.46 eV for the as-prepared CaMoO4, SrMoO4, and BaMoO4 respectively. Room temperature photoluminescence (PL) studies show blue-green emission for all the prepared molybdates attributing to the charge-transfer transitions within the MoO4 2− complex.
