- ABSTRACT: The main objective of this research work is to improve the performance of diesel engine by the design modification of piston crown to promote the uniform combustion by inducing turbulence in the incoming charge. All the experiments are conducted at engine rated speed at 300 bar fuel injection pressure with three injection timings of advanced, standard and retarded fuel injections and at 17.5 compression ratio. More uniform combustion was achieved by creating turbulence to the charge. In view of increasing the turbulence of charge, a stirrer like arrangements is introduced at the top of the piston. No separate power source is required to run the stirrer attachment and it was driven by a simple link mechanism attached to the connecting rod itself. The experimental result proved that the BSFC was lowered by 9.4% and BTE was improved by 7% with the modified piston compared to normal piston at advanced injection timing. Improvement of performance and control of emissions are attained by the modified piston compared to normal piston at all injection timings.
