- Abstract : Ni‐rich LiNi x Mn y Co z O2 (NCM) cathode in lithium‐ion batteries is attractive due to high specific capacity but it suffers from stability issue during delithiation. Cation disorder is typically detrimental to capacity, but a controlled amount of cation disorder can serve as pillar and hence increase stability. In this work, we use hot NH3 treatment to induce pillar effect by moving a controlled amount of Ni 2+ into Li‐layers to alleviate the structural collapse. Abstract : Ni‐rich layered LiNi x Mn y Co z O2 (NCM) materials are used in lithium‐ion batteries because of their high cathode capacity. The high nickel content, however, usually leads to severe capacity fading and structural collapse after repeated charging and discharging. To mitigate these problems, we heat‐treated NCM in an NH3 atmosphere to form Ni 2+ pillars between Li layers. The Ni 2+ pillars improve the cycling stability of NCM by alleviating degradation of the Li layer. This is a simple and effective method for improving the stability of Ni‐rich NCM.
