- Abstract: The habitats present in research sites across Amazonia have usually been characterized only very broadly, for example, as inundated or non‐inundated (terra firma) forests. However, within each of these categories there is considerable variation in soil properties and floristic composition. This variation is likely to determine habitat quality for animal populations through its effects on primary productivity and food availability, thereby affecting carrying capacity. Therefore, comparison of edaphic properties across sites could provide new insight into which factors affect animal foraging patterns, population densities, and home‐range sizes. We provide an example from Estación Biológica Quebrada Blanco in Peruvian Amazonia, where behavioral studies on primates (especially tamarins) have been conducted for more than three decades but little is known about the edaphic or floristic characteristics of the forest they occupy. We used indicator plant species to estimate and map soil base cation concentration and its variability at Estación Biológica Quebrada Blanco. We found that soils in the study area are relatively cation‐poor in a western Amazonian context, which probably translates into low primary productivity. Some differences in soils among the home‐ranges of three tamarin groups were also observed, illustrating the usefulness of the method for detailed habitat mapping. RESUMEN: Los hábitats presentes en los lugares de investigación en la Amazonía usualmente han sido caracterizados de manera muy general, p. ej. bosques inundables o no inundables (tierra firme). Sin embargo, en estas categorías hay mucha variación en cuanto a las características del suelo y a la composición florística. Esta variación es la que posiblemente determina la calidad del hábitat de las poblaciones de animales a través del efecto en la producción primaria y disponibilidad de alimento, de este modo afectando la capacidad de carga. Por lo tanto, la comparación de las propiedades edáficas entre lugares podría proveer nuevos conocimientos sobre los factores que afectan los patrones de búsqueda de alimento de los animales, la densidad poblacional y el tamaño de los rangos de distribución. Presentamos un ejemplo de la Estación Biológica Quebrada Blanco, en la Amazonía peruana, donde el estudio de primates (especialmente del pichico común) se ha realizado por más de tres décadas, pero poco se sabe sobre las características edáficas o florísticas del bosque que habitan. Utilizamos plantas indicadoras para estimar y mapear tanto la concentración de cationes en el suelo así como su variabilidad. Encontramos que los suelos del área de estudio son relativamente pobres en cationes, en el marco de la Amazonía occidental, lo que probablemente signifique baja productividad primaria. Se observaron algunas diferencias entre los suelos de los rangos de distribución de los tres grupos de pichico común, demostrando de esta forma la utilidad del método para un detallado mapeo de hábitat. … (more)
