- Abstract: In this paper, the effects of original corrosion product and microbial film on soil corrosion of X80 steel were studied using electrochemical measurements, scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The original corrosion product enhances the corrosion rate and improves the local corrosion sensitivity of the steel, while the positive effect of the microbial film is more significant than that of the original corrosion product and can be maintained until the end of the experiment. The effects of original corrosion product and microbial film on cathode polarization are more prominent than that on anode polarization. The possible corrosion mechanisms of pipeline steel under the influence of corrosion product and microbial film were discussed in the paper. Highlights: Roles of corrosion product and microbial film in corrosion of X80 steel were studied. Corrosion product improves the corrosion rate and the local corrosion sensitivity. Effects of microbial film are more significant than those of corrosion product. Effects of microbial film can be maintained until the end of the experiment. Microbial film plays more prominent roles on cathode reaction than anode reaction.
