- Abstract : Bottom line : Yes. Patients with reflux symptoms treated with H2 blockers are 16% to 23% more likely to have heartburn remission, 20% to 25% more likely to have pain‐free days, and 28% to 69% more likely to have improvement in overall symptoms compared with patients treated with placebo (SOR: A, systematic review of RCTs). H2 blockers can be used for maintenance therapy in patients without esophageal erosions who receive heartburn relief, in patients with night‐time reflux symptoms, and in patients seeking quicker relief than can be found with protonpump inhibitors (SOR: C, expert opinion).
