- Abstract: Two kinds of Ta/HfC composites with laminated structure were fabricated by spark plasma sintering of a green body with alternately stacked HfC powder and Ta fibre net or foil layers. The composition, microstructure, and physical/mechanical properties of the Ta/HfC composites were investigated by XRD, SEM, EDS, and other techniques. The results revealed that cubic Ta and HfC were the main phases in the Ta/HfC composites, despite their partial reaction to form δ -TaC1-x (0 < x < 0.22), HfC1-y (0 < y < 0.4), and β -Ta2 C at the interface. The introduction of continuous Ta as the interlayers limited densification but improved the mechanical properties of HfC ceramics. Compared to Ta fibre net, Ta foil showed a better toughening effect; in particular, the flexural strength, fracture toughness, and rupture work of the Tafoil /HfC composites were 290 ± 29 MPa, 5.53 ± 1.59 MPa m 1/2, and 900 J/m 2, which were approximately 218%, 148%, and 543% higher than those of HfC, respectively.
