Abstract

Highlights: Innovation of sponge city facilities and its effect, practice of engineering application is illustrated. The main contents of innovative design and construction experience are summarized. Sponge city facilities of existing space are allocated and optimized. Problems and potential research of new technology construction have been identified. Abstract: In order to improve the ecosystem, protect the water environment, solve the problems of urban waterlogging and water pollution, and promote the sustainability of society and ecology, innovative design of sponge city facilities and green infrastructure was carried out in the Chaotou Park, Talent Island, Jiangmen, Guangdong, China. The sponge city facilities in the Chaotou Park were designed in consideration of the local cultural, geological, geographical and hydrological characteristics, methods of ecological construction and other related green concepts. Some innovative sponge facilities, such as gravel contact oxidation system, combination of bioretention cells and multifunctional ponds, were designed for improving the water quality and reducing excavation. The water system of the Chaotou Park was laid out to connect with the Xijiang River to heighten the flood control standard and maintain the water quantity and quality. The volume capture ratio of annual rainfall and annual pollutant control rates of the project were calculated by volumetric method. The construction of the sponge city facilities, according to the requirements of green construction, was initiated in August 2019 and completed in September 2020. After the completion, the ecological and social environment of the Talent Island has been improved, and the sustainable development of Jiangmen City has been promoted.
