- Highlights: This research uses an OD Matrix to coarsely drawn the main commuting destinations. Generalised Estimation Equation is used to incorporate within-group correlation. Travel time and travel cost ratios were used as indicators of competition. Public transit is remarkably slower but cheaper than the car in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. The results suggest that public transit use advances from high parking costs. Abstract: This research empirically assesses the influence of the travel time and the travel cost ratios between public transit and car on public transit modal share for commuting trips. Tokyo Metropolitan Area was selected as study case since it has one of the most competitive and successful public transit services around the world. A Generalized Estimation Equation was used to examine the effects of both competitive ratios. Data for this research was obtained from the 2018 Tokyo Person Trip Survey, the 2015 Japanese Population Census, and the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Geographic Information System download service. The modal share data advances from an Origin-Destination Matrix to approximately drawn the commuting destinations. Further, the sample was restricted to concern only pairs in which non-motorized modes, i.e. competing alternatives for short-distance trips, are not alternatives for the appropriate assessment of the competition between public transit and the car. Overall, the results find that public transit useHighlights: This research uses an OD Matrix to coarsely drawn the main commuting destinations. Overall, the results find that public transit use advance to a greater extent from cheaper services rather than faster services, however, varying from different municipalities in Tokyo Metropolitan Area, as well as whatever it is the commuting origin or destination. Furthermore, though each megacity is unique in its terms, findings from this research provide insights for the design of future transport policies, especially in developing megacities. … (more)
