- Abstract: Habitat loss and fragmentation are the primary causes of global population decline of amphibians and reptiles. In Brazil, that hosts an extraordinary herpetofaunal richness, amphibians and reptiles are clearly undersampled among vertebrate groups in fragmentation research. This bias may underestimate the effects of fragmentation on herpetofauna in this megadiverse country. Here, we conducted an exhaustive literature review to evaluate the effects and patterns of fragmentation on amphibians and reptiles in Brazil. We analyzed 55 papers between 1994 and 2020, comprising 350 cases of the effect (positive, negative, or neutral) of a given fragmentation metric on a particular biological response. Forest biomes (Amazon and Atlantic Forest) were largely overrepresented in relation to non‐forest biomes, comprising 82% of studies. We also found a disproportional prevalence of fragmentation articles on amphibians (75%). Among lower taxonomic groups, Anura and Testudines were significantly overrepresented, whereas Caudata and Crocodylia were neglected. Fragment size reduction, habitat degradation, habitat loss, and matrix contrast were the most studied metrics (70% of studies), while single‐species abundance was the most considered response (59%). The effects of fragmentation were not statistically different between amphibians and reptiles. In general, the impacts were predominantly negative or neutral, while positive effects were infrequent or even non‐existent. We call future research to consider non‐forest biomes and less‐studied taxonomic groups (e.g., Squamata) to fully understand the effects of fragmentation on the megadiverse Brazilian herpetofauna and to take well‐informed conservation actions. No Brasil, que abriga uma extraordinária riqueza de herpetofauna, anfíbios e répteis são claramente subamostrados entre os vertebrados dentro da pesquisa sobre fragmentação. Este viés pode subestimar os efeitos da fragmentação sobre a herpetofauna deste país megadiverso. Aqui, nós conduzimos uma revisão exaustiva da literatura para avaliar os padrões e efeitos da fragmentação sobre anfíbios e répteis no Brasil. Nós analisamos 55 artigos entre 1994 e 2020, compreendendo 350 casos do efeito (positivo, negativo ou neutro) de uma dada métrica de fragmentação sobre uma resposta biológica particular. Biomas florestais (Amazônia e Mata Atlântica) foram amplamente sobrerrepresentados em relação aos biomas não florestais, compreendendo 82% dos estudos. Nós também encontramos uma prevalência desproporcional de artigos sobre fragmentação com anfíbios (75%). Entre os grupos taxonômicos mais baixos, Anura e Testudines foram sobrerrepresentados significativamente, enquanto Caudata e Crocodylia foram negligenciados. Redução do tamanho do fragmento, degradação de habitat, perda de habitat e contraste da matriz foram as métricas mais estudadas (70% dos estudos), enquanto a abundância de uma única espécie foi a resposta mais considerada (59%). Os efeitos da fragmentação não foram estatisticamente diferentes entre anfíbios e répteis. Em geral, os impactos foram predominantemente negativos ou neutros, enquanto efeitos positivos foram pouco frequentes ou mesmo não existentes. Nossos resultados sugerem que anfíbios e répteis respondem de maneira similar, e podem não ser tão vulneráveis à fragmentação. Fazemos um chamado para que futuras pesquisas considerem biomas não florestais e grupos taxonômicos pouco estudados (ex. Squamata) de maneira a compreender adequadamente os efeitos da fragmentação sobre a megadiversa herpetofauna brasileira e orientar melhor as ações de conservação. … (more)
