- Abstract: Conventional nonbiodegradable thermoplastic polymers are mainly utilized by industries for edible and nonedible packaging applications. Various polysaccharides such as soy protein isolate (SPI) were used as a biodegradable polymer on behalf of synthetic polymers. Polysaccharides have superior water vapor permeability properties as compared with other synthetic polymers. In the present study, rheological characterization of SPI/poly(vinyl alcohol) (SPI/PVA) based biocomposite and bionanocomposites were performed. Ecofriendly biocomposite and bionanocomposites were successfully prepared via solution casting technique. Montmorillonite (MMT) was used as a nanofiller to enhance the characteristics of the SPI/PVA matrix. The rheological tests have been carried out to evaluate the viscoelastic behavior of biocomposite and bionanocomposites. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and polarizing optical microscope (POM) images were evaluated to define dispersion of SPI and MMT in the PVA matrix. The shear‐thinning behavior of prepared samples was determined by measuring the viscosity of the polymeric solution. The frequency sweep test was done to govern the long term stability of SPI/PVA/MMT bionanocomposites. SPI/PVA/MMT (0.7% NC) nanocomposite is more stable in contrary to other prepared biocomposite and bionanocomposites. An amplitude sweep test was conducted to define the linear viscoelastic region.
