Abstract: The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the largest interannual fluctuation in the Earth's climate system, and it has strong climatic, environmental and socioeconomic impacts on global scales. Thus ENSO has been a hot research topic in oceanic and atmospheric sciences for more than three decades. As one of the pioneers and leading experts in this research field, Prof. Mark A. Cane of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, a member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, has made seminal contributions to our understanding and prediction of ENSO. In this interview with NSR, Prof. Cane shares his insights on the history and future of ENSO research with a distinct personal touch.
