Abstract

Highlights: The molecular components of synapses are segregated into distinct functional domains. Distinct synaptic subdomains can be observed at the macro and micro scale levels. Compartmentalization allows for coordination of parallel processes at the synapse. Abstract : Synapses are functional, chemical interfaces between cells and have a highly complex molecular architecture. Different types of cells may form these contacts. Connections between neurons in the central nervous system or between motor nerves and skeletal muscle fibers are the most recognized synapses. Specific arrangement of cytoskeleton, directed vesicular trafficking together with precise control of signaling pathways and cellular adhesion ensure proper functioning of these structures and allow for dynamic response to environmental cues. To orchestrate all these processes, cells segregate synaptic components into subsynaptic domains that serve specialized functions. In this review, we summarize the organization of vertebrate neuromuscular junctions as a model of synapses, with a special focus on the segregation of synaptic components into distinct domains.
