Abstract

Abstract: We compared the community structure of methanogens in Murrah breed of buffaloes of four states of north India using 16S rRNA gene clone library method. The results revealed the dominance of methanogens related to Methanobrevibacter in three states, while Methanomicrobium- related methanogens were abundant in one state. Highlights: A total of 224 clones of methanogens from ruminal contents of water buffaloes were generated from four states in North India. All clones belonged to order Methanobacteriales (121), Methanomicrobiales (55) and Methanomassiliicoccales (48). First study on the diversity of ruminal methanogens to show geographic differences in water buffaloes.
