- Abstract: In the present study, chemical composition, antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of the essential oil (EO) from aerial parts of Salvia tebesana were investigated. Fifty-five compounds representing 99.7 % of the total oil composition were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. The EO was predominated by oxygenated sesquiterpenes and the main constituents were E -nerolidol, α-eudesmol, trans -caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, α-pinene, α-epi-cadinol, δ-cadinene, and β-eudesmol, respectively. The cytotoxic effect of the EO on human breast adenocarcinoma, prostate, and melanoma cancer cell lines were examined using AlamarBlue® assay. The EO indicated significant cytotoxic activity against the tested cell lines particularly PC-3. Moreover, the antibacterial evaluation of EO against four bacterial strains indicated a potent activity against Gram-positive bacteria particularly Staphylococcus aureus (minimum inhibitory concentration: 1.4 μg/mL).
