- ABSTRACT: Urban storm-runoff is categorized as an accessible resource to be used in agriculture, industry, and groundwater recharge. One of the applications of porous concrete is to improve the quality of storm-runoff. The objective of present study was to investigate the effect of mixing vermiculite and quartz with porous concrete on reducing urban-runoff pollution. Different proportions of vermiculite and quartz (5–30%) were added to concrete and the effect of these additives on the ability of different mixtures to improve runoff quality was investigated. Results showed that both additives had a positive effect on the porous concrete to improve the quality of urban storm-runoff. With an increase of the additive ratio to 30%, the removal of total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and turbidity parameters increased from 45, 14, and 54% in the control treatment to 85, 43, and 76% in the vermiculite mixtures and 78, 45, and 84% in the quartz mixtures, respectively. None of the samples satisfactorily reduced electrical conductivity (EC) and sodium chloride (NaCl). These values for the best mixture were 6.7% and 7.8%, respectively. The study showed that permeability in the most impermeable quartz sample was good.
