- Abstract: Chitosan is a bio-based polysaccharide having promising biological and antitumor properties. The present study aims at the synthesis of chitosan using shrimp shell waste. Chitosan preparation consists of two consecutive steps such as demineralization and deproteinization. The structure, morphology and optical properties of the obtained chitosan were established using various instrumental techniques like XRD, FTIR, UV–Vis, SEM and TEM. Herein, we have shown that Significant bacterial activity was manifested by chitosan against both gram positive ( S. aureus and S. mutans ) and gram negative (E. coli and P. aeuriginosa ) bacteria. The biosynthesized chitosan exerts an inhibitory effect on the proliferation of MCF-7 breast cancer cells in a dose –dependent manner while being non -toxic to fibroblast L929 normal cells.
