- Graphical abstract: Highlights: Adsorptive recovery of acetic acid, ethanol and butanol was investigated. Lower adsorbent dose (0.3 g/20 mL) showed higher adsorption capacity. Selectivity of Dowex Optipore ™ L-493: butanol > ethanol > acetic acid. Dowex Optipore ™ L-493 showed high capacity to adsorb butanol (0.125 g/g). Abstract: The adsorptive capability of the resins Dowex Optipore ™ L-493 and Diaion ® HP-20 to selectively recover acetic acid, ethanol, and butanol (AEB) from multi-component systems was investigated. Granular activated carbon (Norit ® 1240w GAC) was also tested to compare its performance with the resins. Experiments designed with general factorial analysis were performed to study the effect of acetic acid, ethanol, and butanol concentrations, adsorbent dose, and type of adsorbent on the adsorption capacity of the different adsorbents. Further, a quadratic equation was developed to model the adsorption capacity as a function of the main and interaction effects of the process parameters. The maximum acetic acid adsorption capacity was 0.005 g/g using 1.5% ( w/v ) of Norit ® 1240w GAC and the maximum ethanol adsorption capacity was 0.065 g/g using 1.5% ( w/v ) of Diaion ® HP-20 resin. The maximum butanol adsorption capacity was 0.127 g/g using 1.5% ( w/v ) of Norit ® 1240w GAC. Dowex Optipore ™ L-493 is a suitable adsorbent for the recovery of butanol from syngas fermentation broth due to its specificity and high adsorption capacity (∼0.125 g/g). For ethanol and butanol, their initial concentration had the most significant effect ( P < 0.05) on the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent, rather than the linear and interaction effects of the parameters investigated. … (more)
