- Owing to the critical role of postprandial lipemia in the progression of atherosclerosis, several studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of exercise on postprandial triglyceride metabolism. It has been reported on a number of occasions that aerobic exercise can attenuate postprandial lipemia. This effect appears to be largely due to acute metabolic changes in response to single exercise sessions, rather than long-term adaptations to habitual exercise training. This review will consider the factors influencing the reduction in postprandial lipemia elicited by aerobic exercise and explore the mechanisms involved. Recent work evaluating the effects of resistance exercise on postprandial lipid metabolism will also be discussed.
