- Abstract: Yara International ASA produces CO2 for commercial markets from some of their ammonia plants. This practice has been going on for more than 30 years. Production of ammonia (NH3 ) is the first step in the production of fertilizers. Hydrocarbons form the main source of hydrogen into the ammonia production, while nitrogen is taken from air. CO2 must be removed from the process gas before nitrogen and hydrogen are reacted to NH3 in the subsequent production steps. CO2 is captured as part of the production process and thereafter conditioned before loading on to ships or trucks for transportation. Commercial CO2 is routinely transported on board ships taking from up to 1800 tons per shipment. Transport conditions are approximately similar to the conditions in the onshore storage vessels. This paper presents the unique capture process used to produce CO2 at Yara's ammonia plant in Porsgrunn, Norway. It also presents the local plant infrastructure for conditioning and loading of the pure CO2 on to ships and describes how the commercial ship transportation of CO2 is being performed.
