- Abstract: Butt joints of 7475 aluminium alloy and 8011 aluminium alloy of weld plate thickness of 6 mm were produced by Friction stir welding (FSW). FSW is a method in which the weld plate materials were combined with the help of heat and plastic deformation usually at temperatures lower than the melting temperature of the materials. This paper presents to the effect of joining variables on microstructure and mechanical properties were analyzed. FSW was performed on advancing side of AA 7475 and retrieving side AA 8011 using different rotational speeds (600, 800, 1000, 1200 rpm) and traverse speeds (45, 55, 65 mm/min). The significance of these variables on the mechanical properties of the welded joints were tested in terms of hardness and tensile testing. The experimental outcomes were perceived that complete defect free welded joints are attained at the higher rotational speed and the transverse speed of 65 mm/min that was 76.80% of parent material and maximum value of hardness 150HV at thermo mechanically affected zone. Better tensile characteristics were accomplished at higher value of tensile strength was obtained 180Mpa higher rotation rate and proper weld feed rate. The mechanical characteristics of the butt joints have been correlated closely to the interface microstructure among that welded aluminum alloys. The microstructure of several areas have been perceived and studied by scanning electronic microscope.
