Abstract

Abstract: Background: National audit data showed our hospital had one of the highest numbers of term admissions in the region during the period January until June 2017. Methods: Authors conducted a quality improvement project aimed at reducing the number of term admissions in our neonatal unit. With retrospective audit during the pre-intervention phase (January until June 2017), we identified hypothermia and hypoglycemia as the two modifiable risk factors for term admissions. During the "intervention phase" from July 2017 until Dec 2017, authors introduced interventions in the delivery room and postnatal ward. Real-time data were collected during the post-intervention phase from January until December 2018. Results: We had reduced the number of admissions with a diagnosis of hypoglycemia or hypothermia by 49% during the intervention phase and by 44% during the post-intervention phase. Conclusion: This QI project reduced the number of term admissions with a diagnosis of hypoglycemia or hypothermia.
