- Graphical Abstract: Highlights: A novel cycle operating activated sludge process model was established, calibrated, and validated. Batch tests, sensitivity analysis and genetic algorithm were employed for model calibration. Multi-objective optimization was used for performance improvement and energy savings of the process. Trade-offs relationship between effluent quality and aeration energy was analyzed. Abstract: A novel five-tank integrated activated sludge process (FTIASP) model based on ASM2d was established, calibrated, and validated in this study. The multi-objective optimization method was carried out for the validated model to get a set of optimized operation parameters for the performance improvement and energy savings of FTIASP. Seven kinetic parameters ( Kh, ηNO3, μH, qPHA, qPP, Kmax, and ηNO3, PAO ) in the model were calibrated through an iterative calculation procedure, where the simulation results of six different batch tests, sensitivity analysis and genetic algorithm were employed for the calibration. A good consistency was found between the results of model prediction and experimental results. The average relative deviation values of effluent COD, NH4 + -N, TN and TP were 4.72%, 18.87%, 9.45% and 38.11%, respectively. Analysis to the trade-offs between the effluent quality (EQ) and aeration energy (AE) showed that under the optimized strategy EQ and AE of the process could be reduced by 60.80% and 29.75%, respectively, compared with the default strategy. The obtained results indicated that multi-objective optimization method plays an important role in the performance improvement and reduction of energy consumption of activated sludge process. … (more)
