- Highlights: Construction site layout design is a facilities allocation problem that can help in reducing cost. This article presents a critical literature review of site layout optimisation articles. A gap analysis of the literature is done and recommendations for future researchers are presented. Abstract: Purpose: Designing the construction site layout is a facilities allocation problem where allocating facilities in the right place would help in reducing the overall construction cost. Most of the relevant peer-reviewed literature discussed static site layout models where facilities are allocated once throughout the construction period. More recently, dynamic site layout models were introduced to allow relocation of facilities in between the stages. This is because most of the site facilities are not required throughout the whole construction period. Methodology: This article presents a comprehensive literature review of the construction site layout problem for both static and dynamic approaches. Findings: Peer-reviewed articles on construction site layout optimization were collected and their methods, assumptions, limitations and contributions were summarized and critically analyzed to provide a key-reference point for decision makers and researchers in this field. A gap analysis of the literature was done and recommendations for future research are presented.
