- Abstract: Cymothoid fish parasites settle on hosts in ways that may impact fish health and energetics. High abundances of Artystone minima observed in Nannostomus beckfordi from the Jeju River in eastern Amazonia were investigated to answer the following questions: (a) What factors are associated with the high prevalence at this locality?; (b) Is high abundance associated with co‐infestation of alternative hosts?; and (c) Is parasite presence associated with host species growth and/or reproduction? Fish assemblages were sampled quarterly (August 2017–May 2018) from five habitats along with environmental data. Parasitic indices were calculated, and parasite presence used to evaluate differences in growth of hosts using analysis of covariance considering host sex and sampling season (wet vs. dry). Parasites were only abundant in one of the habitats, a large, shallow backwater bay with macrophytes. Abiotic environmental factors (flow and depth) likely impact parasite transmission and are, therefore, particularly important in producing these local patterns. Two secondary hosts, Hyphessobrycon cf. rosaceus and Moenkhausia collettii, were found in the wet season. Based on host biology compared to other fish in the habitat, parasite infestation is inferred to be depth associated and long‐term infestation is apparently limited in alternative hosts. Altas abundâncias de Artystone minima observados em Nannostomus beckfordi do Rio Jeju, no leste da Amazônia, foram investigadas para responder as seguintes questões: (a) Quais fatores estão associados com a alta prevalência nessa localidade?; (b) A alta abundância está associada com a co‐infestação de hospedeiros alternativos?; e, (c) A presença de parasitos está associada com o crescimento e/ou reprodução do hospedeiro? As assembleias de peixes e variáveis ambientais foram amostradas trimestralmente (agosto de 2017 a maio de 2018) em cinco hábitats. Os índices parasitários foram calculados e a presença/ausência do parasito foi utilizada para avaliar diferenças no crescimento de Nannostomus beckfordi utilizando uma análise de covariância, considerando sexo e evento de amostragem (seco vs. chuvoso). Os parasitos foram abundantes somente no hábitat de remanso grande, raso e com macrófitas. Os fatores ambientais abióticos de correnteza e profundidade provavelmente afetam a transmissão do parasito e, portanto, são particularmente importantes na produção desses padrões locais. Dois hospedeiros alternativos, Hyphessobrycon cf. rosaceus e Moenkhausia collettii, foram encontrados na estação chuvosa. Com base na biologia do hospedeiro em comparação com outros peixes no habitat, infere‐se que a infestação de parasitos seja associada à profundidade e que a infestação de longo prazo aparenta ser limitada nos hospedeiros alternativos. A presença de parasitos associou‐se significativamente apenas com o peso (controlado pelo comprimento) da fêmea de Nannostomus beckfordi na estação chuvosa. Além disso, os ovários de fêmeas não parasitadas da estação chuvosa apresentaram vários estágios de maturação, enquanto as fêmeas parasitadas eram todas imaturas, indicando um impacto significativo dos parasitos na capacidade reprodutiva do hospedeiro. … (more)
