- Graphical abstract: Highlights: Cryogels are supermacroporous cryostructures developed at subzero conditions. Cryogels have unique properties desired for biomedical applications. Through cryostructuring, cryogel properties can be modulated. Cryogels can be fabricated in form of monoliths, beads, discs, sheets, and injectable gels. Abstract: Advanced polymeric materials and scaffolds are developing as indispensable candidates for biomedical applications. Cryogels, which are hydrogels synthesised under sub-zero conditions with large and interconnected macroporous structure, in recent years, has developed promising applications in wide areas of biomedical research. Significant progress has been made in cryostructuring these cryogels with different designs, architecture and topography. In this review, we have focussed on advancement of these cryogels for biomedical applications in terms of cryostructuring and integration with advanced technologies. First, an overview about the mechanistic understanding of cryostructuring of cryogels is presented. Next, the advancement in cryogel structuring is presented for specific applications in form of aligned cryogels, injectable cryogels and molecular imprinted cryogels, which are discussed to address challenging question in biomedical research. Finally, 3D bioprinted cryogels and lab on chip cryogels as emerging tools for biomedical research are discussed.
