- Abstract : Volatile organic compounds released by plants and fruits have been suggested as indicators of biotic stress in plants or fruits due to pathogen (phytobacteria, fungi and phytoviruses) infection. Among the hundreds of volatile organic compounds, p -ethylphenol has been reported as one of the most important volatile organic compounds released by strawberries upon infestation or pathogen infection. Detection of these compounds in a highly selective manner would help in the identification of infected fruits. Here, a novel enzymatic biosensor made of tyrosinase-modified carbon nanotube (CNT) electrode has been developed for the detection of p -ethylphenol. Cyclic voltammetry and constant potential amperometry were used for p -ethylphenol detection. High sensitivity of 4.0 ± 0.5 μA·cm −2 ·μM −1 with measurement range of 0–100 μM (R 2 = 0.9956) was achieved by constant potential amperometry for the detection of p -ethylphenol. Limit of detection and limit of quantification were determined as 0.10 ± 0.02 μM and 0.29 ± 0.07 μM respectively. Stability studies showed satisfactory performance of the biosensor for one time disposable use. The biosensor experienced very little interference from other compounds typically present in strawberries volatile signature. The studies using synthetic analyte revealed that the biosensor could be reliably used for p -ethylphenol detection in practical applications.
