Abstract

Abstract: Community-based disaster management (CBDM) is an effective approach to addressing geological disasters, particularly for rural residents and communities in developing countries. It is acknowledged by scholars and practitioners that participation is key for a sustainable CBDM program. This study empirically examined whether social trust (including interpersonal trust and institutional trust) affects rural residents' participation in CBDM (PCBDM). Moreover, it explored the mediating effects of place attachment and the moderating effects of self-efficacy and gender. The data were collected through a questionnaire survey (N = 516) in the geodisaster-prone area of rural Chongqing, China. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was applied to test the proposed hypotheses. The findings indicate that interpersonal trust plays a crucial role in motivating PCBDM. Institutional trust can increase participation by increasing place attachment. Self-efficacy and female identity strengthens the linkage between interpersonal trust and PCBDM. The current study provides a new psychological perspective for understanding and promoting PCBDM in practice.
