- Abstract: An unusual precipitation phase, with semi-smooth boundaries and semi-jagged boundaries simultaneously, co-oriented with adjacent poor-carbon regions appeared in the high chromium cast iron after bearing quenching and tempering. The samples were investigated by using scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer and electron backscatter diffraction technology for exploring the behavior of the carbide precipitation phase. The precipitation phase of the M23 C6 secondary carbides despoiled carbon nearby, pressing adjacent matrix into co-oriented ferrites with poor carbon. Both competed for territories, merging respectively without actual growing, within the regions of the original quenched grains. And then, the low-angle jagged grain boundaries appeared between them. Relatively, the boundaries, overlapping with the boundaries of the original quenched grains, of both phases inherited and retained the relatively smooth feature. Highlights: A precipitation phase with semi-smooth boundaries and semi-jagged boundaries simultaneously. Co-orientation relationship, and accompanying jagged low-angle boundaries, between carbide precipitations and poor-carbon regions. High-angle boundaries, smooth, between carbide precipitations and poor-carbon regions inherited the boundaries of the original quenched grains. Phases competed for territory, merging respectively without actual growing, in the regions of the original quenched grains.
