Abstract

Supervisor's supporting comments Barry's current focus is to quantitatively analyze 'Histone Code' post-translational modification changes during the mammalian cell cycle and in genome-specific locations, with particular attention to histone methylation and histone methyltransferase activity. Barry worked diligently to learn the technology and methodology we employ in a short period, and not only has he also learned all the tools and techniques necessary for his success in my group in quick order, but Barry has also incorporated his own personal interests and thinking which has led to a major new research direction in my laboratory. Barry has devised a method to characterize histone methylation dynamics, generating information on methyltransferase activity and site-specific methylation kinetics in a single experiment. His research has resulted in his inclusion as a co-author in six publications currently published or in press, on two of which he is first author and wrote the entire manuscript and he has four additional manuscripts under review where he is a co-author. Barry writes and speaks well, and has given several presentations such as at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry conference. Barry is an incredible scientist who spends very long hours in the lab, every day of the week, and is most deserving of this honor.
