- Abstract : Introduction: Diabetes is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia. Many susceptibility genes have been identified and their knowledge may enable better prediction of the disease progression and management. Diabetic patients show alteration in salivary gland composition secondary to an elevated blood glucose level. The parotid salivary gland is affected at an early stage. Infrared laser phototherapy can stimulate salivary glands and alleviate inflammation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate histological and ultrastructural regenerative effects of low-level laser irradiation on diabetic rats. Materials and methods: The study comprised parotid and submandibular salivary glands specimens sampled from rats that were divided into four groups: (a) healthy control group; (b) diabetic rats group; (c) diabetic rats subjected to low-level laser irradiation dose of 5 J/cm 2 group; and (d) diabetic rats subjected to 20 J/cm 2 low-level laser irradiation. Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of a single dose of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg). Thirty days after induction of diabetes the parotid and submandibular glands of the third and fourth groups were subjected to laser irradiation (5 and 20 J/cm 2, respectively). The rats were killed and their parotid and submandibular salivary glands were removed and fixed for histological assays using light and electron microscopes. Histological changes were less prominent in the submandibular gland than in the parotid gland. After the glands were subjected to low-level laser irradiation, the degenerative changes were reduced in the parotid gland, whereas were alleviated in the submandibular gland. The regenerative effect of low-level laser therapy was more marked for the lower dose of irradiation. Conclusion: A low dose of laser irradiation was better in alleviating the degenerative changes than high dose in both the parotid and submandibular salivary glands of diabetic rats. … (more)
