Abstract

Abstract : The fuel cell design can be simplified and the energy density and fuel utilization improved while the production cost lowered if a fuel cell is operated on a mixture of fuel and air. This type of fuel cell, denoted as mixed reactant fuel cell, imposes stringent catalytic constraints on the materials of the cell in particular the electrodes but not only on them. The catalytic requirement are first of all selectivity for certain reactions to take place while others to be suppressed. Enhancing the rate of desired reactions is a later step. We here discuss possible ways to achieve the required selectivity.
