- Abstract : Grid modernization is a transformation from a more centralized and monolithic electric grid to one that is modular and agile—changing from central generation and radial transmission to a combined centralized and distributed generation with intelligent load control. The grid's current configuration is not easily adaptable to infrastructure changes, such as the addition of distributed energy resources (DERs) or new loads, and has even exhibited some failures. To address this need for grid resiliency and accommodate the dynamic build of the new grid, grid modernization provides the capability for automation, reliability, and real‐time responsiveness sought by grid operators.
