- Highlights: A definition of disturbance within the emergency department context have been made. The concepts interruption and disturbance should not be used as synonyms. A negatively perceived interruption could be classified as a disturbance. When trying to minimize interruptions, focusing on the situations that create disturbance in workflow is important for patient safety.
