Abstract

Abstract: In his 1995 ethnography Inside The Cult, Harvey Whitehouse argued that theorists have not been able to construct a satisfactory picture of religious behavior because they overlook "the way in which religion is handled cognitively" (1995, 194–220). In this essay, we will argue that, although Whitehouse's cognitive theory of "modes of religiosity" helps to explain many of the features and underlying dynamics of divergent ways of being religious, it doesn't take sufficient account of the diverse ways in which socialization can affect people's cognitive and religious development. Taking Whitehouse's ethnography as a basis for arguing for a more psychoanalytically informed approach, we will try to show how recent findings in the fields of neuroscience and developmental psychology can be used to build on Whitehouse's theory and produce a more comprehensive theoretical framework for explaining how nature, culture, nurture, and psychology interact to produce divergent and oscillating modes of religiosity. [cognition, modes of religiosity, new religious movements, psychology, whitehouse] Résumé: Dans son ethnographie Inside The Cult de 1995, Harvey Whitehouse a soutenu que les théoriciens n'ont pas été en mesure de dresser un tableau satisfaisant du comportement religieux parce qu'ils négligent «la manière dont la religion est gérée cognitivement» (1995, 194–220). Dans cet essai, nous soutiendrons que, bien que la théorie cognitive de Whitehouse sur les «modes de religiosité» aide à expliquer de nombreuses caractéristiques et dynamiques sous‐jacentes des manières divergentes d'être religieux, elle ne tient pas suffisamment compte des diverses manières dont la socialisation peut affecter le développement cognitif et religieux des individus. En prenant l'ethnographie de Whitehouse comme base pour plaider en faveur d'une approche plus informée sur le plan psychanalytique, nous tenterons de montrer comment les découvertes récentes dans les domaines des neurosciences et de la psychologie du développement peuvent être utilisées pour s'appuyer sur la théorie de Whitehouse et produire un cadre théorique plus complet pour expliquer comment la nature, la culture, l'éducation et la psychologie interagissent pour produire des modes de religiosité divergents et oscillants.
