- Highlights: The new designed W10V5Co4Si2B4 alloy steel has good laser cladding formability. The wear resistance of W10V5Co4Si2B4 alloy is 2.8 times higher than W10V5Co4 alloy. A modified wear resistance equation is established. Abstract: Due to the poor laser formability of W10V5Co4 alloy steel and high wear resistance requirement for remanufacturing wear-out parts with preset-powder laser cladding (PPLC), Si and B were added to improve formability and wear resistance of PPLC W10V5Co4 alloy steel. Effects of Si (2 wt%) and B (0–4 wt%) on the microstructure, laser formability and wear properties of the designed alloy steel were investigated. The results indicate that laser formability and wear resistance were enhanced with the addition of Si and B, and the W10V5Co4Si2B4 alloy steel PPLC coating (Si: 2 wt%, B: 4 wt%) has the best combined properties of laser formability and wear resistance. The W10V5Co4Si2B4 alloy steel PPLC coating, with a hardness of 908 HV0.2, has the wear rate of 1.5 × 10 −8 mm 3 /(N·mm), which is 2.8 times higher than original W10V5Co4 alloy steel PPLC coating. The mechanism of Si and B on the improvement of laser formability and wear resistance were discussed in detail. A modified wear resistance equation is established here, which can provide new clues to design materials with high wear resistance for laser remanufacturing wear-out key parts.
