- Highlights: NCLX activity is required for brown adipose tissue survival and thermogenesis. Stimulation of NCLX -/- brown adipocytes with norepinephrine causes mitochondrial Ca 2+ overload and apoptosis. NCLX -/- mice fail to maintain their body temperature in response to cold challenge. Abstract: Mitochondrial Ca 2+ signaling is a well-appreciated regulator of cell metabolism and energy production. A major function of mitochondria in brown adipose tissue (BAT) is thermogenesis. Assali et al. offer new insights into how the mitochondrial Ca 2+ extrusion mediator NCLX is crucial for BAT survival and thermogenesis.
