Abstract

Locating cross-country faults in a parallel transmission line is a critical and challenging task because faults occur at different locations. In this paper, an accurate fuzzy inference system scheme which provides fault location results for cross-country faults is presented. The fault information from single end of the parallel transmission line is used. A 400 kV, parallel transmission line is designed in MATLAB while fuzzy inference system scheme is modeled with Fuzzy Logic Toolbox. A "MAMDANI" type of fuzzy inference system with triangular member functions is modeled for attaining the fault distance. The fault information in voltages and currents is captured. Then, the impedances in each phase is computed and given as input to fuzzy inference system which aims to locate the faulty location. The simulation results attest that it is able to precisely locate faults in transmission lines without justifying the classification. The results are also compared with existing fault-location methods to describe salient features of fuzzy inference system scheme.
