Abstract

Abstract : Background : Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can struggle with language and communication skills. This, in the therapist's experience, seems to be an area of work parents and other professionals notice a distinct change whilst having music therapy. Objective : Drawing from the experience of working with children with ASD, this presentation will focus on music therapy techniques used in sessions in order to promote vocal expression, communication, and receptive and expressive language. Method : The presenter will use extracts from music therapy sessions in a special needs school with children aged 4–7 as part of the Trial of Improvisation Music Therapy's Effectiveness for children with ASD (TIME-A), to illustrate and explain the techniques proposed. Discussion : Every child has its own patterns of communicating and interacting. Through clinical improvisation and play, the therapist can formulate tailored music therapy techniques to enhance and develop skills. Conclusion : Creative music therapy techniques can promote vocal, communication, and language skills in children with ASD.
