- Graphical abstract: Highlights: Discovered a NHPI-catalyzed oxidation of styrenes to benzaldehyde derivatives. Practical convenience and highly functional group tolerance. Mild reaction conditions and low-cost reagents. Abstract: A room temperature N -hydroxyphthalimide-catalyzed oxidation of styrene derivatives to the corresponding aldehydes has been developed. The use of 1, 1, 1, 3, 3, 3-hexafluoroisopropanol as the solvent was determined as being key for efficient oxidation. The incorporated oxygen atom originates from molecular dioxygen.
