- Abstract: The effects of rare earth elements (REE) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) 1026 steel were studied. Optical microscopy showed that the addition of REE could reduce network and needle ferrite and modify the type and morphology of inclusions. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed that the austenite onset temperature and the austenite finish temperature were increased. The as-cast microstructures were refined, and the impact toughness of the tested steel increased from 10.7 to 14.8 J cm −2 . Therefore, the mechanical properties of as-cast AISI 1026 steel can be greatly enhanced with the addition of REEs.
