- Abstract: Mild steels have versatile application in various structural design like in steel frame buildings, pipelines, railway wagons etc. Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding is common to use this kind of materials. However, less depth of penetration in single weld pass make it time consuming and less productive during fabrication of thick sections (usually >3 mm). Activating flux tungsten inert gas (A-TIG) welding is growing as solution for less penetration. Successful implementation of the A-TIG welding process on mild steel could reduce the fabrication cost drastically. Therefore, in the current work, efforts are made to develop the weld joint using suitable processes/approaches. In view of above, weld joints of mild steel were developed using conventional TIG welding process and activating flux tungsten inert gas welding process. The weld joints were characterized in respect of weld bead geometry, angular distortion, microstructure, hardness distribution, tensile properties, and the impact toughness. Results have been discussed in light of microstructure study and mechanical behaviour of the weld joints.
