- Abstract : In this study, we explored the possibility of synthesizing Cu-As alloys from copper electrolyte by a controllable electroplating method. The effects of electrochemical potential, copper to arsenic molar ratio, as well as the addition of EDTA, on the electroplating of Cu-As alloys from the simulated electrolyte containing copper and arsenic, were investigated. XRD and SEM/EDS were utilized to characterize the synthesized Cu-As alloys produced from each test. It was found that the decrease of electrodeposition potential and copper concentration can lead to the formation of copper arsenide intermediate phases, which bring about phase transitions of the alloy from Cu to Cu3 As and then to Cu5 As2 . It was also discovered that the alloy electrodeposited in EDTA-contained electrolyte presents a plate morphology, with Cu-As phases dispersedly distributed on the copper base. The synthesized Cu-As alloys with such phase structure present a superior corrosion resistance.
