Abstract

Abstract : This paper describes the preparation of ultra‐thin epoxy‐based films as model coatings for high resolution corrosion studies on aluminium alloy AA2024‐T3. The image created by JuliaWitt and colleages shows how thin epoxy‐amine coatings have a high tendency to undergo phase separation and pore formation. By optimizing the spin‐coating process, we achieved a homogeneous film structure. The film thickness increases linearly with increasing number of bi‐layers. The intermetallic particles (IMPs) below the coating can still be identified in Scanning Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (SKPFM) Volta Potential maps confirming that the model films are suitable for high‐resolution corrosion studies at the buried coating/metal interface.
