- Abstract : The effect of suspended sediment concentration on the characteristics of hydraulic jump in symmetrical trapezoidal channels of60° and 75°side slopes has been studied experimentally and compared with the classic jump. The first tests series of classical jump, were performed in rectangular flume and the second series conducted in two different trapezoidal side slopes. In both the cases; the tests series were conducted under clear water and with fine sands of 0.22mm as suspended sediment in different concentrations (C=4, 8 and 12%). The results of tests with clear water flow and with different sediment concentrations indicate that by increasing the sediment concentrations, the jump length ratio and the sequent depth ratio decreased and also the energy dissipation is increased. In the present study, three different sections viz. two sections of trapezoidal shape with side slopes of 60° and 75° and one section of rectangular shape were considered. The comparison of results in flow with Fr1 =10 for all three sections for sediment concentration of 12% with clear water shows that jump length ratio decreases by 14%, 22% and 18%; sequent depth ratio decreases by 12%, 21% and 31% and energy dissipation ratio increases by 9%, 12% and 11% respectively. Finally some dimensionless relations for prediction of jump characteristics have been proposed.
