Abstract

Abstract : Indonesia's democracy is becoming increasingly illiberal. President Joko Widodo's use of the security forces to achieve political ends is representative of a broader effort by his administration to politicise formerly impartial state institutions. Widodo's concerns about the loyalty of certain units and his plans to purge particular supporters of political Islam from the security forces and civil service during his second term are likely to politicise the security forces further.
