Abstract

Abstract : A reddish–brown coloured mushroom that is widespread in Europe and North America, Laccaria proxima (Boud.) Pat. (German name: Braunroter Lacktrichterling), contains two alkaloids, E ‐proxamidine and Z ‐proxamidine with a highly unusual structure. In their Full Paper on page 8035 ff., H. Schrey and P. Spiteller describe the isolation and structure elucidation of these two alkaloids, consisting of an eight‐membered heterocyclic ring system with a formamidine unit. The structures were established by 2D NMR spectroscopic methods, HR‐(+)‐ESIMS, and HR‐(+)‐ESIMS/MS and metabolic profiling of the crude extract for potential biosynthetic intermediates allowed a hypothetical biosynthesis to be proposed. E ‐Proxamidine also occurs in traces in fruiting bodies of Laccaria bicolor, the first ectomycorrhiza‐forming fungus to have its genome completely sequenced.
